Topstep Review 2026: Is It Worth It For Futures Traders?
Topstep is the GradTraders futures benchmark for traders who want a structured path through the Trading Combine, Express Funded Account and, where available, Live Funded Account. Its strengths are a clear futures-only model, an established evaluation framework and a documented progression path. The trade-offs are monthly subscription costs, a trailing Maximum Loss Limit, separate payout rules after passing and country-specific live access.
A concise Topstep review covering the Trading Combine, XFA payouts, Maximum Loss Limit, TopstepX and live progression.
Topstep is a natural starting point before comparing Apex, MyFundedFutures, Take Profit Trader, Bulenox or Tradeify.
The GradTraders comparison table uses an editorial role for Topstep rather than a separate numeric score.Disclosure & Risk Notice: This article is educational and informational content, not financial advice, investment advice, tax advice or a personal recommendation. Futures trading is leveraged and can produce rapid losses. Topstep’s Trading Combine and Express Funded Account are simulated environments; passing an evaluation does not create a personal broker balance or guarantee live-market access. Evaluation and activation fees can be lost, and payout eligibility depends on the current programme rules.
GradTraders does not currently list a direct Topstep partner offer in the prop-firm master table. Some other GradTraders articles contain affiliate links or partner routes, but commercial relationships do not determine the editorial position of Topstep in this review.
You can view current GradTraders partner routes separately on the Exclusive Discounts & Updates page.
Compare first: Topstep is a futures programme, not a forex/CFD prop-firm clone. Contract limits, trailing drawdown, trading hours, payout rules and platform access behave differently. Compare Topstep with the wider futures cluster in the GradTraders prop firm comparison table before paying for any evaluation.
Quick Verdict: Topstep Is The GradTraders Futures Benchmark
Topstep is one of the strongest futures prop firms to research when a trader wants a clear, structured evaluation. The standard route starts with the Trading Combine and moves to an Express Funded Account after a pass, with possible live progression later.
The appeal is easy to see: Topstep is futures-only, TopstepX is the standard platform, the $50K, $100K and $150K Combines publish their targets, contract limits and Maximum Loss Limits, and there is no fixed time limit on the standard evaluation.
What needs closer attention comes after the pass. XFA payout rules depend on the selected path, the account balance changes after withdrawals, and Live Funded Account access is a separate decision made by Topstep. That is where most of the important detail sits.
Topstep At A Glance
| Feature | Topstep | GradTraders View |
|---|---|---|
| GradTraders role | Futures benchmark | The first futures-funded route to understand before comparing newer or more promotional alternatives. |
| Core evaluation | Trading Combine | A simulated evaluation with one core Maximum Loss Limit rule plus profit and consistency objectives. |
| Core account sizes | $50K, $100K and $150K buying-power levels | The practical risk budget is the loss allowance, not the headline account size. |
| Platform | TopstepX | Topstep currently states TopstepX is the only available trading platform. |
| Trading Combine billing | Monthly subscription; no fixed time limit for passing | Time flexibility is useful, but repeated rebills can make slow attempts expensive. |
| Main risk rule | Trailing Maximum Loss Limit | The MLL updates from end-of-day balance but is monitored in real time, including unrealised P&L. |
| Post-pass stage | Express Funded Account — Standard or Consistency payout path | Still simulated. Payout eligibility depends on the selected path and current balance. |
| Profit split | 90/10 on current standard policy | Newer traders should model the 90% share rather than relying on older grandfathered policy references. |
| Live stage | Risk-team call-up to Live Funded Account where eligible | Live uses real capital and real markets, but progression is discretionary rather than automatic. |
| Country access | Worldwide subject to citizenship, residency, OFAC and partner restrictions | Some countries can access XFA payouts but not Live; verify the current list before purchase. |
| Evidence level | Research-led | No direct Topstep execution, payout, dashboard or support experience is claimed. |
How Topstep Works In 2026
Topstep’s current programme has three distinct stages, each with different risk, payout and capital conditions.
1. Trading Combine
A paid simulated evaluation. The trader must reach the Profit Target, keep the Consistency Target under control and avoid hitting the Maximum Loss Limit.
The subscription renews every 30 days until the trader passes or cancels. Topstep currently places no fixed maximum time on passing the standard Combine.
2. Express Funded Account
A simulated funded-level account earned after passing. The balance starts at $0 while the buying-power label remains $50K, $100K or $150K.
The trader chooses either Standard or Consistency payout rules and must follow the scaling plan and Maximum Loss Limit.
3. Live Funded Account
A real-capital, real-market account offered after Topstep’s Risk Team selects a trader for live progression, subject to jurisdiction.
The Live account has its own daily-loss, payout, balance-expansion and professional market-data rules.
Trading Combine Costs, Targets And Contract Limits
Topstep currently sells two pricing paths for the standard Trading Combine. The Standard path has a lower monthly subscription but charges a one-time activation fee when an XFA is earned. The No Activation Fee path costs more each month but removes that XFA activation charge.
| Account | Standard Path | No Activation Fee Path | Profit Target | Maximum Loss Limit | Max Contracts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50K | $49/month | $95/month | $3,000 | $2,000 | 5 minis / 50 micros |
| $100K | $99/month | $149/month | $6,000 | $3,000 | 10 minis / 100 micros |
| $150K | $199/month | $229/month | $9,000 | $4,500 | 15 minis / 150 micros |
The Standard path currently charges a $149 activation fee for each XFA earned. Prices, taxes and temporary offers can change, so the checkout screen should be treated as controlling.
The Maximum Loss Limit Is The Rule That Matters Most
Topstep describes the Maximum Loss Limit as the programme’s singular core rule. It is a trailing threshold that rises with the highest end-of-day balance and never moves back down. Once it reaches the starting balance in the Trading Combine, it locks there.
The calculation is based on end-of-day balance, but the threshold is enforced during the session. Realised and unrealised P&L count. If the account reaches the active MLL intraday, Topstep liquidates the account.
An end-of-day trailing MLL is still active during the session. The threshold moves after the day closes, but the current level remains enforceable while positions are open.
Trading Combine Consequence
Hitting the MLL stops the account from qualifying for funding until it is reset. The trader can still practice, but the Combine no longer remains pass-eligible in that state.
Express Funded Consequence
Hitting the MLL permanently closes the XFA. Back2Funded may be available for eligible accounts that fail before the first payout, but it is a separate paid reactivation route.
How The 50% Consistency Target Works
The Trading Combine also uses a 50% Consistency Target. The best single day should stay below 50% of the Profit Target. On the standard $50K Combine, for example, Topstep recommends keeping the best day below $1,500 against the $3,000 target.
Exceeding the consistency target does not instantly fail the account. Instead, the amount the trader needs to earn can increase, so a very large winning day can make the evaluation harder to finish cleanly.
For that reason, it is worth understanding the target before trying to hit the full objective in one oversized session.
Topstep Daily Loss Limit: Optional In The Combine And XFA
Topstep currently allows traders to add a fixed Daily Loss Limit at purchase on the Trading Combine, with corresponding XFA settings. The published amounts are $1,000 on $50K, $2,000 on $100K and $3,000 on $150K accounts.
Triggering this Daily Loss Limit is not treated as a rule breach. Positions are flattened, pending orders are cancelled and the trader is blocked for the remainder of that session. The account can resume in the next session.
This is different from the Maximum Loss Limit, which can end the evaluation or close the XFA. Traders should not confuse a session-level stop with the trailing account floor.
Express Funded Account: Standard vs Consistency
After passing the Trading Combine, the trader chooses one of two current payout paths for the Express Funded Account. This choice is locked for that account.
| Rule | XFA Standard | XFA Consistency | GradTraders View |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payout eligibility | 5 winning days of $150+ Net P&L | 3 trading days with at least one trade per day and 40% consistency or better | Standard rewards repeated qualifying days; Consistency can be faster but constrains profit concentration. |
| Profit split | 90/10 | 90/10 | New traders should model the current split rather than older grandfathered terms. |
| Max payout per request | 50% of balance, capped by account size | 50% of balance, with a higher size-based cap | The balance percentage and dollar cap both matter. |
| $50K cap | $2,000 | $3,000 | Promotional DLL-linked caps can temporarily differ; check the live policy. |
| $100K cap | $3,000 | $4,000 | Do not assume the nominal account size is withdrawable. |
| $150K cap | $5,000 | $6,000 | The XFA is designed as a simulated proving stage, not a cash balance. |
After each payout, the XFA’s Maximum Loss Limit resets to $0 permanently and the relevant winning-day or consistency cycle restarts. That can materially change how much room the trader has after taking money out.
Topstep Payouts: What Traders Actually Need To Know
The current standard profit split is 90/10, meaning the trader keeps 90% of approved profits under the applicable policy. The minimum payout request is currently $125.
In an XFA, payout access depends on the selected Standard or Consistency path. Topstep also checks the current payout policy, prohibited conduct and professional behaviour before approving a request.
The Live Funded Account has a different structure. Before 30 qualifying $150+ winning days, traders can request up to 50% of their share of trading profits after meeting the five-day requirement. After 30 benchmark winning days, daily payout access can unlock and the trader can request 100% of the unlocked share, subject to current live rules.
A profitable XFA is not automatically payout-eligible, and the displayed balance is not the same thing as cash held in a personal broker account.
TopstepX Is Now The Core Platform
Topstep’s current help centre states that TopstepX is the only available trading platform. That is a meaningful change from older Topstep material and third-party guides that may still discuss external platform routes.
TopstepX combines execution, account selection, risk settings and performance tracking inside Topstep’s own environment. Level 1 market data is included for the Trading Combine and XFA, while Level 2 depth is an optional paid upgrade.
For traders who specifically require NinjaTrader, Tradovate, TradingView or another third-party platform, current Topstep availability should be checked rather than assumed from older content.
Live Funded Account: Real Capital, But Not An Automatic Destination
Topstep’s Live Funded Account is materially different from the Trading Combine and XFA. Topstep describes it as real capital trading in live markets. The Risk Team decides when a trader is called up.
When the trader moves live, active XFAs close. The initial live account size is based on the average of eligible XFAs, and Topstep currently makes 20% of the combined XFA balances available for trading immediately, with the remainder held in reserve and unlocked through performance.
The Live stage also introduces professional market-data costs and live-specific risk controls. Topstep currently covers one exchange’s professional data fee, with additional exchanges charged separately.
Country Eligibility And The Pro Account Route
Topstep says no US citizenship is required and that traders can participate worldwide subject to citizenship, residency, OFAC sanctions and brokerage-partner restrictions. The minimum age is 18.
Some countries are currently eligible for the Trading Combine and XFA but not the Live Funded Account. Topstep has introduced a Pro Account for selected traders in jurisdictions where live market access is unavailable. The Pro Account is simulated and uses parameters similar to live, but it is not a live-market account.
For UK and international readers, general Topstep availability does not necessarily include the full path to Live. Check both the eligibility list and the account stage available in your jurisdiction.
How I Assessed Topstep
I have not used a Topstep account, so this remains a research-led review rather than a first-hand account test.
The assessment is based on Topstep’s programme overview, Trading Combine parameters, pricing, Maximum Loss Limit rules, Daily Loss Limit guidance, XFA payout paths, Live Funded Account documentation, TopstepX information and country-eligibility policy.
That is enough to compare the published rules accurately, including changes that older Topstep guides may no longer reflect. It cannot reproduce support quality, payout-review handling, dashboard behaviour or the experience of trading through TopstepX over time.

Topstep vs Apex And CFD-Style Prop Firms
Topstep and Apex belong in the same futures-focused research cluster, but their account mechanics are different. Apex uses its own evaluation and Performance Account structures, while Topstep centres on the Trading Combine, XFA and possible Live call-up.
| Route | GradTraders Role | Why Compare It? | Main Distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep | Futures Benchmark | A structured futures-first reference point for evaluation, simulated payout stage and possible live progression. | Trading Combine → XFA → LFA framework. |
| Apex Trader Funding | High-Visibility Futures Alternative | A major futures comparison with different drawdown and post-pass mechanics. | Current EOD and Intraday evaluation routes with simulated Performance Accounts. |
| The5ers | Patient-Trader Route | Useful for international traders comparing a forex/CFD-style simulated programme rather than futures. | Different products, platforms, drawdown logic and regional availability. |
| FTMO | Benchmark CFD-Style Route | Direct-use GradTraders benchmark for traders who do not specifically need futures. | Simulated forex/CFD-style evaluation rather than a futures-only programme. |
A US futures trader may reasonably start with Topstep or Apex. A non-US trader looking for MetaTrader, cTrader, forex or index CFDs is comparing a different product family.
Who Topstep May Suit
Topstep May Suit
- Traders who already understand futures contracts, tick values and session structure.
- US-focused traders who want a futures-first funded route.
- Traders who can work within a trailing Maximum Loss Limit.
- Traders who prefer a structured progression rather than an instant-style funded model.
- Traders comfortable using TopstepX as their execution platform.
Topstep May Not Suit
- Complete beginners who do not understand futures risk.
- Forex or CFD traders who need MetaTrader, cTrader or spread betting.
- Traders who dislike subscription costs while attempting an evaluation.
- Traders who need guaranteed live-market progression.
- Anyone choosing mainly because of the nominal account size.
Topstep Or A Personal Futures Broker Account?
Topstep can make sense for a trader who wants to prove a futures process inside a rules-based programme without immediately risking a larger personal account. The trade-off is that the trader accepts subscription fees, programme limits and conditional payout access.
A personal futures broker account is simpler in ownership terms. The capital is the trader’s own, profits and losses belong directly to the account, and there is no prop-firm payout approval stage. Personal capital, however, is directly at risk.
Which option fits better depends on capital, experience, country, futures knowledge and whether the trader values programme structure more than direct account control.

Final Verdict: Is Topstep Worth It In 2026?
Topstep belongs on the shortlist for experienced futures traders who want a recognised, structured evaluation. The real decision is whether its rules fit the way you already trade.
If you are comfortable with the trailing MLL, monthly Combine cost, TopstepX and the XFA payout structure, Topstep is a serious option. If any of those are a poor fit, another futures route—or a personal broker account—may suit you better.
For GradTraders, Topstep remains the futures benchmark: the route to understand first, not the route every trader should automatically choose.
Topstep Review FAQ
Is Topstep legitimate?
Topstep is an established futures-funded trading business and the GradTraders futures benchmark for research. That does not make the Trading Combine easy, risk-free or equivalent to a regulated personal broker account. Traders still need to understand the simulated-account stages, payout rules and live-progression conditions.
How does the Topstep Trading Combine work?
The Trading Combine is a simulated futures evaluation. Traders must reach the Profit Target, manage the 50% Consistency Target and avoid hitting the Maximum Loss Limit. The standard Combine is subscription-based and currently has no fixed time limit for passing.
What is the Topstep Maximum Loss Limit?
The Maximum Loss Limit is a trailing account floor based on the highest end-of-day balance. It moves upward as the account grows, never moves back down and is enforced intraday using realised and unrealised P&L. Hitting it can end a Combine attempt or close an Express Funded Account.
How much does Topstep cost?
Topstep currently offers Standard and No Activation Fee Trading Combine paths for $50K, $100K and $150K account sizes. The monthly price varies by size and path, and Standard accounts currently add a one-time XFA activation fee after passing. Prices and taxes can change, so checkout should be verified before purchase.
How do Topstep payouts work?
Current Express Funded Accounts use either a Standard path based on five $150+ winning days or a Consistency path based on three trading days and a 40% consistency target. Both use a 90/10 split and account-size payout caps. Live Funded Accounts use separate payout rules.
Does Topstep only use TopstepX?
Yes. Topstep’s current help centre states that TopstepX is the only available trading platform. Older material referring to other platforms may no longer describe the current standard programme.
Can UK traders use Topstep?
Topstep says no US citizenship is required and eligibility depends on citizenship, residency, sanctions and brokerage restrictions. UK traders can research Topstep, but they should confirm the current eligibility list and whether their jurisdiction supports the full path to a Live Funded Account.
Is a Topstep funded account live or simulated?
The Trading Combine and Express Funded Account are simulated. The Live Funded Account uses real capital and live markets. Some jurisdictions may receive a simulated Pro Account rather than live access, so the account stage and country rules should always be checked.
