FTMO Review 2026: Is It Still The Best Prop Trading Firm?
FTMO remains the benchmark against which I judge modern prop firms. This is not a generic overview: it combines my own unsuccessful but revealing FTMO Challenge with a detailed assessment of the 1-Step and 2-Step routes, Standard and Swing accounts, cTrader, drawdown, simulated capital, reward credibility and the alternatives traders should compare before paying a fee.
Disclosure & Risk Notice: This article is educational and informational content, not financial advice, investment advice, tax advice or a personal recommendation. Trading CFDs, forex, crypto CFDs and other leveraged products involves significant risk. Prop firm challenge fees can also be lost when evaluation rules are breached, even if the trader’s wider strategy is profitable.
GradTraders has a commercial relationship with FTMO. If you start an eligible FTMO Challenge through a GradTraders link, GradTraders may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. That relationship does not determine the independent 8.5/10 rating or remove the weaknesses recorded in this review.

Quick Verdict: FTMO Remains The GradTraders Prop-Firm Benchmark
FTMO remains the GradTraders benchmark—not because it is the easiest challenge or the right answer for every trader, but because it combines operating history, professional account monitoring, strong platform support and established reward credibility better than most competitors.
I discovered that the cTrader environment was clean, the dashboard was responsive and the account rules were visible throughout. I did not pass, which is important evidence in itself: a well-run challenge does not remove the pressure created by a target, a finite drawdown and a fee already paid.
The 8.5/10 rating stops short of exceptional because every stage uses simulated capital, the loss rules can end a profitable-looking attempt, and the trader gives up some control compared with a personal broker account. FTMO is strongest for experienced, rule-disciplined traders who understand exactly why their strategy fits the selected route.
8.5/10 — the current GradTraders benchmark for established prop firms.
Experienced traders with a tested method and the discipline to follow strict loss limits.
FTMO Challenge: 2-Step with the Swing account type and cTrader.
Simulated capital, strict drawdown rules and a challenge fee that can be lost.

Which FTMO Route Should You Choose?
FTMO requires two separate decisions. First choose between the 1-Step and 2-Step evaluation routes. Then confirm whether the Standard or Swing account type matches the way you trade. Swing is available only through the 2-Step product.
FTMO Challenge: 1-Step
A single evaluation phase designed for experienced traders who want the shortest route toward an FTMO Account.
GradTraders view: attractive for traders who already know they can operate within the tighter rule structure, but Swing is not available.
FTMO Challenge: 2-Step
Uses the FTMO Challenge and Verification phases before the trader progresses toward an FTMO Account.
GradTraders view: the more natural route for traders who want the Swing account or prefer a two-stage demonstration of consistency.
Standard Account
Offers leverage up to 1:100, subject to product and instrument. Restrictions can apply to selected news trading and overnight or weekend holding once trading an FTMO Account.
GradTraders view: better suited to disciplined intraday traders who fully understand the funded-stage restrictions.
Swing Account
Available through the 2-Step route, with leverage up to 1:30 and no restrictions on trading selected news or holding positions overnight and over weekends.
GradTraders view: the better fit for my own FTMO attempt and for genuine swing traders who need positions to develop.
FTMO Rating Breakdown
The category scores are editorial judgements rather than mathematical guarantees. The overall 8.5/10 is not a simple average: it weighs operating history, direct-use confidence, rule clarity, platform quality, reward credibility, trader suitability and the structural limitations of simulated prop trading. What Is FTMO?
FTMO is an established proprietary trading programme founded in 2015. Traders pay for an evaluation, attempt to reach the required profit objective without breaching the risk limits, and may progress to an FTMO Account if they complete the applicable stages.
The crucial distinction is that the evaluation and FTMO Account use simulated capital. The account is therefore not the same as depositing money into a personal broker account. Successful traders can receive real monetary rewards, but eligibility remains governed by FTMO’s rules and review process.
FTMO currently offers 1-Step and 2-Step evaluation routes, with Standard and Swing account choices depending on the product, plus MetaTrader and cTrader platform access. Its appeal is the opportunity to demonstrate a proven method against a larger simulated allocation while limiting the trader’s direct financial exposure mainly to the challenge fee.
That opportunity should not be confused with easy funding. The account size is meaningful only when the trader can protect the drawdown, follow the permitted trading conditions and avoid changing behaviour simply to reach the target.
My Experience Using FTMO
Shortly after Christmas, I purchased a discounted FTMO account of roughly £70,000, approximately equivalent to a $100,000 route. I cannot recall the exact fee, but it was around £350. The setup was straightforward and I chose cTrader, which remains my preferred trading platform.
The operational experience was one of FTMO’s strongest features. The interface was clean, the account metrics updated quickly and the dashboard made the remaining loss allowance and challenge objectives easy to monitor. The main platform limitation for me was the lack of the same direct cTrader-to-TradingView workflow I use with a traditional broker.
I attempted the challenge once and did not pass, although I came close. The failure was not caused by a confusing rule or a poor platform. It was primarily a trading-process problem: as the account moved closer to failure, I became less patient and more focused on rescuing the challenge.
At one stage, little more than £100 remained before the maximum drawdown would be reached. I opened a highly leveraged position late on Friday and held it into the weekend. Positive news produced a favourable gap when the futures market reopened, moving the position sharply in my favour and giving the account another chance.
I still did not get over the line, but the experience made the review more useful. FTMO delivered the professional environment it promised; my own decisions determined the result. That separation is one reason I remain positive about the firm without pretending the challenge is easy.
FTMO Pros And Cons
Pros
- One of the strongest reputations in the prop trading industry.
- Long operating history compared with many newer prop firms.
- Strong payout credibility among successful traders.
- Clean dashboard and clear challenge metrics in my experience.
- cTrader support was a major advantage for my own workflow.
- Swing account flexibility can suit traders who need weekend holding.
Cons
- The challenge is harder than it can look from the outside.
- Strict drawdown rules can fail an otherwise capable trader.
- The trading environment is simulated rather than a personal broker account.
- cTrader and TradingView integration may not work the same way as with a broker.
- Challenge fees can add up if traders repeatedly fail without improving.
- Standard and Swing account restrictions must be understood before choosing.
What I Learned From My FTMO Challenge
First, the account structure must fit the strategy before the challenge begins. The Swing route suited me because weekend holding and greater freedom around selected news events mattered more than the higher leverage available through Standard. Choosing the wrong structure can make a viable strategy incompatible with the rulebook.
Second, passing a challenge and trading well are related but not identical objectives. Targets, drawdown limits and the desire to recover a fee can alter decision-making. The trader has to protect the normal process rather than allowing the evaluation to dictate when or how aggressively to trade.
Third, drawdown should be treated as scarce risk capital. When most of the loss allowance has already been used, the correct response is not automatically to increase size. My own late-stage recovery trade succeeded temporarily, but it was not a repeatable solution.
Finally, FTMO is a tool rather than a replacement for every other trading route. I can see a clear use case for a proven but undercapitalised trader. I still prefer my own broker account for direct control, withdrawals and TradingView integration, but that preference does not weaken FTMO’s position as the prop-firm benchmark.
How The FTMO Challenge Works
1. Choose An Account Size
FTMO offers a range of account sizes designed to suit different budgets and trading objectives. Larger accounts provide greater profit potential, but they also come with higher challenge fees.
2. Pay The Challenge Fee
To begin the evaluation process, traders pay an upfront challenge fee. Repeated attempts can become expensive if multiple challenges are failed.
3. Meet The Profit Target
The objective is to achieve the required profit target while complying with the firm’s trading rules and risk limits.
4. Stay Within Drawdown Limits
A trader can be profitable overall and still fail if daily or overall drawdown limits are breached. Understanding these rules is essential.
5. Complete Verification
Depending on the account selected, traders may need to complete a verification stage to demonstrate consistency.
6. Receive A Funded Account
Traders who successfully complete the process can receive access to a funded account-style arrangement and become eligible for profit sharing.
FTMO Standard vs Swing Account
Standard and Swing are not a simple better-or-worse choice. Standard may fit disciplined intraday traders who want higher available leverage and can operate within the funded-stage restrictions. Swing is available only through 2-Step and may fit traders whose method genuinely requires overnight, weekend or selected-news flexibility. I chose Swing because it matched how I already traded—not because it made the evaluation easier.
| Account Type | Why It Matters | GradTraders View |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Account | Higher leverage may appeal to some traders, but extra rules can apply around major news and trading conditions. | Can suit active intraday traders who fully understand the restrictions. |
| Swing Account | Allows more flexibility around holding positions over market closes and weekends. | This was the better fit for my own FTMO attempt and risk tolerance. |
| Broker account alternative | Gives more direct control over personal capital and withdrawals, but requires risking your own money. | Still my preferred long-term route where suitable, especially with cTrader and TradingView integration. |
Is FTMO Legit?
In the GradTraders view, FTMO is a legitimate and established prop trading business. It has operated since 2015, maintains a professional evaluation environment and has built one of the strongest reward reputations in the modern retail prop-firm market.
My direct experience supports that conclusion. The account was delivered as described, the objectives were visible, the metrics updated reliably and I encountered nothing that made me question whether the evaluation was being administered fairly.
However, “legitimate” does not mean regulated in the same way as a retail broker, suitable for every trader, or easy to pass. FTMO’s service is a simulated performance programme with contractual reward conditions. Traders still need to understand the business model, the fee risk and the exact account rules before purchasing.
Important distinction: A legitimate company can still offer a difficult product. FTMO’s credibility does not remove the need for skill, discipline, conservative sizing and independent judgement.
FTMO vs The5ers, E8 Markets And Funded Trading Plus
FTMO remains the benchmark prop firm in my mind because of its operating history, reputation and my own direct experience using the platform.
| Firm | Why Compare It? | GradTraders View |
|---|---|---|
| The5ers | The5ers stands out for patience, account scaling and long-term trader development. | Strong for traders who dislike challenge deadlines and value consistency. |
| E8 Markets | E8 Markets is one of the strongest modern challengers with flexible account models and payout-style features. | Useful alternative for traders who want a more modern prop firm feel. |
| Funded Trading Plus | Funded Trading Plus offers Instant Funding, 1-Step Express and 2-Step Classic routes. | Relevant for traders who want multiple challenge structures and a GradTraders discount route. |

Who Is FTMO Best For?
FTMO May Suit
- Experienced traders who already have a tested strategy.
- Traders with limited capital who want larger simulated account access.
- Traders comfortable with strict drawdown and risk rules.
- cTrader users who want a serious prop firm route.
- Traders who want one of the strongest reputations in prop trading.
FTMO May Not Suit
- Complete beginners with no proven process.
- Traders who struggle with discipline or revenge trading.
- Traders looking for guaranteed income.
- Traders who dislike strict rulebooks.
- Traders who would rather trade their own capital through a broker.
For traders who prefer full account control, direct market access through a traditional broker and cTrader integration with TradingView, a broker such as IC Markets may feel more natural than a prop firm account.

Final Verdict: Is FTMO Still Worth It?
Yes—FTMO is still worth considering for the right trader, and it remains the GradTraders prop-firm benchmark. Its operating history, professional dashboard, cTrader support, route choice and reward reputation create a stronger overall package than most newer firms can yet demonstrate.
The qualification matters. FTMO is not a beginner product, the account uses simulated capital, and a capable trader can still lose the challenge fee through poor discipline or a single rule breach. The displayed account size should never distract from the actual maximum loss available.
My own failed attempt increased rather than reduced my confidence in the review. The platform and rules performed as expected; the weakness was my response to challenge pressure. That is a more useful conclusion than a promotional success story because it shows both what FTMO does well and what it cannot do for the trader.
In my opinion FTMO is best suited to an experienced trader with a tested method, an affordable fee and a route that genuinely matches the strategy. Traders who want direct control of their own funds, simpler withdrawals and full broker-platform integration may still prefer a personal broker account.
FTMO Review FAQ
Is FTMO legitimate?
In the GradTraders view, yes. FTMO has operated since 2015, provides a professional evaluation environment and has one of the strongest established reward reputations in modern retail prop trading. That does not mean the challenge is easy or suitable for every trader.
Is an FTMO Account real or simulated?
FTMO states that traders use fictitious or simulated capital throughout the evaluation and FTMO Account stages. Eligible rewards paid to successful traders are real money, but the account itself is not the same as a personally funded live broker account.
Should I choose the FTMO 1-Step or 2-Step Challenge?
The 1-Step route is the shorter evaluation and can suit experienced traders who want one phase. The 2-Step route uses a Challenge and Verification stage and is the only route that offers the Swing account type.
What is the difference between FTMO Standard and Swing?
Standard can provide higher leverage but restrictions can apply to selected news events and holding positions overnight or over weekends on an FTMO Account. Swing uses lower leverage and removes those news and holding restrictions, but it is available only through the 2-Step route.
Which FTMO platforms are available?
FTMO currently lists MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader. Platform availability and account settings should be confirmed in the current challenge configurator before purchasing.
Does FTMO pay real rewards?
FTMO Accounts use simulated capital, but eligible rewards paid to successful traders are real. Current reward splits, withdrawal methods, timing and fee-refund conditions should be checked directly before purchasing a challenge.
Is FTMO suitable for beginners?
FTMO is not the natural starting point for a complete beginner. Traders should already understand position sizing, maximum daily loss, maximum loss, news risk, weekend gaps and the exact evaluation objectives before paying a challenge fee.
