Quick Verdict: IG vs Pepperstone

Pepperstone wins this comparison by 9.1/10 to 8.8/10. It is the stronger complete choice for a UK active trader who wants FCA-regulated access, spread betting, cTrader, TradingView, MT4, MT5 and raw-plus-commission Razor pricing.

IG remains the stronger choice when breadth matters more than a focused active-trader setup. Its proprietary web and mobile platforms sit alongside MT4, MT5, TradingView, ProRealTime, L2 Dealer, APIs, share dealing, ISA, SIPP and wider specialist market routes.

The 0.3 difference is small enough that the better broker still depends on the job. Pepperstone is better aligned with focused active trading; IG becomes more compelling when investing accounts, DMA, professional tools and wider market coverage matter.

International Availability: Which IG or Pepperstone Account Can You Actually Open?

The 9.1/10 Pepperstone and 8.8/10 IG scores on this page are based mainly on the UK propositions compared above, but both broker groups serve international clients and the account can change materially by country. Your country of residence can determine the legal entity you contract with, regulator, client-money rules, leverage limits, compensation arrangements, product range and even the account type available. A UK spread-betting or CFD account should never be assumed to be the same account offered elsewhere.

IG has the more visibly mapped regional structure. IG publishes separate regulated offerings for the UK, Europe, Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand, Dubai, Japan and the United States, and it also lists an IG International route for eligible clients. The products are not identical: the UK proposition includes spread betting, CFDs and share dealing; European and other regional entities use their own CFD and leveraged-product menus; Australia can include CFDs and share dealing; and the United States is a separate forex proposition rather than the UK CFD/spread-betting account. IG’s former US retail forex business is now branded tastyfx, with a separate US regulatory structure.

Pepperstone is also a genuinely international broker group, but eligibility is more country-specific. Pepperstone’s current client-acceptance information includes Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, among many other markets. The UK adds spread betting alongside Standard and Razor CFD accounts; Australia and many international routes centre on Standard and Razor CFD accounts under the Pepperstone entity applicable to the client’s residence. Pepperstone’s UK site expressly states that its service is not intended for residents of the United States.

United KingdomDedicated FCA-regulated UK entities.Pepperstone Limited, FCA-regulated.This is the closest match to the comparison on this page: both offer UK leveraged trading; Pepperstone adds Standard, Razor and spread-betting choices, while IG combines spread betting and CFDs with a wider investing ecosystem.
Europe
Examples: Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway
IG publishes a European offering separate from the UK and Switzerland.Available in many European countries through the relevant Pepperstone entity; the exact entity varies by residence.Do not carry UK spread-betting assumptions across automatically. European clients generally receive locally regulated CFD / leveraged-product accounts and local protection rules.
AustraliaDedicated Australian offering with CFDs and share-dealing access.Dedicated Australian offering with Standard and Razor CFD accounts. Both are locally regulated, but product menus, leverage and protections differ from the UK versions.
Asia, Middle East & AfricaDedicated regional offerings include Japan, Singapore, Dubai and South Africa; eligible clients elsewhere may be routed to another IG group entity or IG International.Current accepted-client information includes Hong Kong, India, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and the UAE, among other countries. The contracting entity, regulator, leverage and available products can change materially by country. Check the account-opening entity before relying on UK terms.
United StatesThe UK/International CFD account does not apply. IG Group’s US retail forex proposition is now branded tastyfx and operates under a separate US regulatory framework. The Pepperstone service discussed on this page is not available to US residents.US readers should treat this article as a comparison of the international/UK broker groups, not as a like-for-like US account comparison.
Other countriesAvailability may depend on whether a local or international IG entity accepts the application.Availability is controlled by Pepperstone’s country and entity eligibility rules.Never infer account access from the global brand alone. Confirm residence eligibility, contracting entity, regulator, products, leverage and protections before opening or funding an account.

GradTraders international rule: compare the legal entity before comparing the brand. The UK scores on this page remain useful for platform quality, pricing structure and overall broker capability, but an international reader should first establish which IG or Pepperstone entity will actually hold the account and then re-check the products and protections available in that jurisdiction.

How The 9.1 And 8.8 Ratings Should Be Read

The current GradTraders 24-broker comparison table places Pepperstone at 9.1/10 and IG at 8.8/10. That makes Pepperstone the overall winner, while IG still leads several major categories.

Pepperstone earns 9.1/10 because its pricing and platform mix is unusually well suited to active trading. IG earns 8.8/10 because it combines strong regulation, broad markets, investing accounts and specialist platforms, but it does not offer cTrader and is less focused on raw-account trading.

Platform Comparison: Active-Trader Focus vs Professional Breadth

Both brokers provide high-quality platforms, but the lists reflect different philosophies. Pepperstone concentrates on platforms commonly used by active forex and CFD traders. IG extends further into proprietary, professional, DMA and investing workflows.

Active-Trader Winner

Pepperstone Platforms

  • Pepperstone proprietary web and mobile platform.
  • MetaTrader 4 for established EA and forex workflows.
  • MetaTrader 5 for newer multi-asset and automation tools.
  • cTrader with depth of market and C# automation.
  • TradingView for advanced chart-led execution.
  • Spread betting available across the supported UK platform setup.

Winner when: the trader wants cTrader, TradingView or a focused Razor-based trading setup.

Ecosystem Winner

IG Platforms

  • IG proprietary web and mobile trading platform.
  • MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.
  • TradingView connectivity.
  • ProRealTime advanced charting and automation.
  • L2 Dealer for eligible DMA workflows.
  • Trading APIs and share-dealing infrastructure.

Winner when: the trader needs specialist charting, DMA, APIs, investing or the widest professional platform range.

Platform verdict: Pepperstone wins the intended active-trader category because cTrader is a decisive difference. IG wins overall platform breadth through ProRealTime, L2 Dealer, APIs and investing integration.

Razor Pricing vs IG’s Spread-Led Model

Pepperstone provides Standard CFD, Razor CFD and spread-betting accounts. Its UK Razor account separates raw market pricing from fixed commission on forex and spot gold, with current published commission from £2.25 per lot per side.

IG uses spread-led pricing on many spread bets and CFDs, with commissions on selected products such as share CFDs. Its strength is not one universal raw account; it is the ability to trade a very wide range of markets through several platforms and product structures.

Pepperstone therefore wins pricing structure for active FX and spot-gold traders. IG can still be cheaper on a particular index, share, option or specialised market. The correct decision requires the actual instrument, spread, commission, overnight funding, conversion and platform being used.

All-in cost rule: never compare brokers from a single minimum-spread claim. Include commission, financing, slippage, currency conversion, guaranteed-stop premiums and any platform or market-data costs.

Spread Betting And UK Tax Position

Both Pepperstone and IG offer spread betting to eligible UK clients. This allows traders to speculate in pounds per point without owning the underlying asset.

Spread-betting profits are generally free from UK Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty under current rules, although tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and can change.

IG has the deeper historical spread-betting identity and the broader market range. Pepperstone has the more active-trader-oriented spread-betting platform choice because it supports MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and the Pepperstone platform.

The result is therefore split: IG for range and institutional history; Pepperstone for active platform flexibility.

Regulation, Client Money And FSCS Protection

Both brokers provide clear FCA-regulated UK accounts. Pepperstone Limited is authorised and regulated by the FCA under registration number 684312. Pepperstone states that client money is segregated and that eligible clients may be covered by the FSCS up to £85,000 if funds cannot be fully returned following a failure.

IG operates through multiple FCA-authorised UK companies, including IG Index Ltd and IG Markets Ltd. IG also describes segregated client-money arrangements and possible FSCS compensation of up to £85,000 for eligible shortfalls.

IG receives the higher safety score because of its scale, multiple regulated UK entities and operating history since 1974. Pepperstone remains a strong regulated broker and does not lose the overall comparison merely because IG wins this category.

Protection verdict: IG wins narrowly on institutional depth. Both remain leveraged-product providers, and FCA regulation does not prevent trading losses caused by market movement or poor risk control.

Market Breadth, DMA And Investing

IG wins this section decisively. Its current UK material advertises more than 15,000 trading markets, while its wider group also provides share dealing, GIA, ISA and SIPP routes across thousands of stocks and ETFs.

IG’s L2 Dealer platform provides direct-market-access functionality for eligible share and forex workflows, while ProRealTime and APIs add further specialist routes.

Pepperstone is more focused. Its current UK proposition advertises more than 2,700 spread bets and CFDs. This is substantial for active trading, but it does not reproduce IG’s investing accounts or complete DMA and specialist-product ecosystem.

A trader who wants one provider for active trading, listed investments and tax wrappers may prefer IG despite the lower overall comparison score. A trader focused on forex, indices, commodities and active platforms may not need that extra breadth.

My Experience With IG And My View Of Pepperstone

I have used IG historically. It was an important part of my trading journey, but my experience included occasions when I could not access the account during a live session and needed urgent support. That reduced my personal confidence even though IG remained a highly regulated and established company.

I have not traded a live Pepperstone account to the same extent. The Pepperstone rating is therefore research-led rather than supported by equivalent personal execution and withdrawal history.

The lack of direct Pepperstone use does not remove its 9.1/10 result. The GradTraders comparison methodology also weighs the current platform stack, pricing structure, regulation, spread-betting route and practical suitability.

The honest conclusion is that IG has more direct GradTraders history, including a disclosed negative experience, while Pepperstone has the stronger current active-trader proposition on the evidence available.

Which Broker Is Better For Active Traders?

Pepperstone is the stronger choice for active forex, index and CFD traders who want cTrader, TradingView, MetaTrader and a clear Razor account structure.

IG remains highly capable, especially for traders using ProRealTime, MT5, TradingView, L2 Dealer or APIs. It becomes the better choice when the strategy requires unusually wide markets, DMA or integration with an investing account.

For the central GradTraders active-trader use case, Pepperstone wins. For a professional or multi-product setup, IG can reasonably be the better individual choice.

IG vs Pepperstone Final Verdict: Pepperstone Wins 9.1 To 8.8

Pepperstone keeps the overall GradTraders win at 9.1/10. Its combination of spread betting, Razor pricing, cTrader, TradingView, MT4, MT5 and its proprietary platform is better aligned with focused active trading.

IG remains the Best Established UK All-Rounder at 8.8/10. It wins on market breadth, investing access, institutional history, ProRealTime, L2 Dealer, APIs and wider professional infrastructure.

The 0.3-point gap is real, but it does not make IG the wrong choice for every trader. The deciding question is whether active-trader pricing and cTrader matter more than IG’s broader investing, DMA and professional-tool ecosystem.

Decision rule: choose Pepperstone when cTrader, Razor pricing and active-platform flexibility are the priorities. Choose IG when one established provider for trading, investing, DMA and professional tools is more useful.
