eToro Review 2026: Is It Good For Copy Trading, Stocks And Beginner Investors?
eToro scores 8.2/10 in the GradTraders 24-broker research bank. Its appeal is easy to understand: people can buy their own investments, explore what other investors are doing and use CopyTrader to follow eligible portfolios. But there is considerably more to eToro than its social-trading reputation. The group now operates distinct services in the UK, Europe, the United States, Australia and other markets, and the account available in one country may work quite differently from another. This review looks at where eToro is genuinely competitive, what investors can actually own, and the fees and restrictions that could change their decision.
The GradTraders View
eToro combines investing and CopyTrader in one platform, but the account offered to a UK, US or Australian customer can be quite different. This review compares the actual local services before examining copying, investment ownership and costs.

Quick Verdict: eToro Earns 8.2/10
eToro is particularly appealing to people who want to invest in shares or ETFs, follow other investors or use CopyTrader to copy an investment strategy. Its web and mobile platform brings research, discussion, portfolio management and investment tools together without requiring specialist trading software. CopyTrader and Smart Portfolios give it a character of its own.
There are limits. A copied portfolio may not contain every position held by the trader being followed. Investment dealing, share CFDs and cryptoassets have different charges and protections. In some countries particular products are unavailable altogether. I also wouldn’t choose eToro ahead of a purpose-built forex broker for MetaTrader automation or frequent short-term trading. The strength of its 8.2/10 rating is investing and social functionality, not an attempt to beat every trading broker at everything.
eToro International Accounts: What Changes By Country?
This is where eToro’s international story becomes interesting. American investors have a separate securities-and-crypto service, UK clients can access ISA products provided by Moneyfarm, and Australian customers investing in shares use a managed investment scheme. eToro has also developed licensed businesses in Singapore and the UAE. These are not cosmetic differences: they affect what can be bought, how it is held and which rules apply.
| Country or region | What is different about eToro here? | The important account check |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom FCA · eToro (UK) Ltd | Shares, eligible ETFs, CFDs and CopyTrader sit alongside a GBP payment service and separate Moneyfarm-powered ISAs. UK retail clients cannot trade crypto CFDs; eToro offers US-listed ETFs to UK customers as CFDs rather than direct holdings. | Is the order an underlying investment or a CFD? The ISA and the eToro Money account have different legal arrangements. UK product rules. |
| European Economic Area CySEC · eToro (Europe) Ltd | The European investment, CFD and authorised crypto services have their own terms. Spain is a notable exception: users registered from 2 August 2024 cannot trade CFDs under the country-specific restriction. | The EU offering is not one identical account in every country. Check local CFD eligibility and crypto arrangements. eToro’s Spain disclosure. |
| United States US securities and crypto entities | Eligible stocks, ETFs, options and crypto are offered through US services rather than the overseas CFD model. CopyTrader launched for US investors in October 2025, allowing eligible investors to copy US traders’ securities and crypto positions. | Asset and feature eligibility can depend on the state. An American account does not gain access to the international CFD range. US CopyTrader launch. |
| Australia ASIC · eToro AUS Capital | Non-leveraged share and ETF purchases are held through the eToro Service managed investment scheme. The investor has a beneficial interest while the scheme holds legal title. Leveraged stock positions are CFDs. | Shares held through the scheme are not directly registered in the customer’s name and generally cannot be transferred out as shares. Australian share structure. |
| Singapore MAS · eToro Singapore | eToro activated its Capital Markets Services licence in July 2025 for a locally supervised offer including eligible shares from more than 20 exchanges, ETFs and derivatives. | Confirm which investments, derivatives and copying functions are available to the individual applicant. Singapore licence. |
| United Arab Emirates ADGM FSRA · eToro (ME) | A distinct ADGM-regulated investment business serves eligible customers in the region, rather than offering a UK or European account under another name. | Check residency eligibility, available products and the local agreement. Legal-entity disclosures. |
| Canada and other countries Availability varies | eToro’s published international terms restrict Canadian applications to that service; a GradTraders international gateway is not evidence that an eToro account can be opened. | Check accepted residence and the contracting entity before assuming the product is offered. Account terms. |
That variety is a strength of eToro as an international group, but it also means the headline list of markets on a global website is not necessarily the menu available to a new customer. Location can change both the investment itself and the protections attached to it.
Three Ways To Use eToro
Founded in 2007 and now listed on Nasdaq as ETOR, eToro has developed into more than a place to speculate on market prices. The platform offers three quite different approaches to investing. Which one appeals will usually tell you whether the account is worth considering.
Invest For Yourself
Choose individual shares and ETFs, including eligible fractional investments. You make the decisions and control the portfolio, subject to the products available in your country.
CopyTrader
Allocate money to follow a selected investor’s positions and subsequent trades. You keep control of your allocation, but the trades and risks are driven by someone else’s decisions.
Smart Portfolios
Invest in a themed selection of assets or traders rather than following one person. The portfolio’s holdings, strategy and rebalancing method deserve checking first.
eToro also offers CFDs and cryptoassets where permitted. They are not interchangeable with owning a share or ETF. The platform makes these routes accessible, but it is important to see exactly which product is being purchased.
The eToro Platform: Simple To Use, Less Flexible For Automation
eToro’s own web and mobile platform brings watchlists, portfolio monitoring, CopyTrader, research and order entry into the same environment. That integration is useful for an investor who does not want to manage several trading applications. TradingView-powered charts are available inside eToro, with technical indicators and drawing tools; this is not the same as connecting an eToro account through TradingView’s external broker panel.
There is no native MT4, MT5 or cTrader offering. That is a real limitation for traders running Expert Advisors, cBots or automated strategies built for those platforms, but not a meaningful drawback to somebody buying an ETF every month. The platform suits investing and social interaction better than specialist high-frequency execution.
CopyTrader: What A $200 Copy Really Buys
CopyTrader is eToro’s most distinctive feature. Rather than placing every trade yourself, you allocate money to an eligible investor and eToro attempts to reproduce their positions and subsequent trades proportionally. There is a $200 minimum per copied investor and a $1 minimum for each copied position. This small detail can affect what ends up in your account. eToro’s CopyTrader terms.
| Weight of a holding in the trader’s portfolio | With $200 allocated | With $400 allocated |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25% | $0.50 — won’t open | $1 — meets minimum |
| 0.5% | $1 — meets minimum | $2 |
| 10% | $20 | $40 |
These are simple percentage calculations, not a live portfolio test. At $200, any holding below 0.5% of the followed portfolio falls short of the $1 threshold. A small allocation to a heavily diversified trader could therefore miss some positions. Cash holdings, timing differences and local product restrictions can create further divergence. A UK customer who has not completed the required crypto checks, for example, cannot simply assume the copied account will contain the original trader’s crypto holdings.
Copy Stop-Loss is easy to misunderstand. eToro’s default level is 40% of the amount invested remaining, not a limit of 40% lost. On a $200 copy, that means an equity threshold of $80—a $120 decline, or 60%, before any execution differences. It can be changed within eToro’s published limits; it is not a guaranteed stop against market gaps. Copy Stop-Loss explanation.
Copying does not carry an additional management fee, but the charges on the positions being copied still matter. Before committing cash, I would examine the investor’s holdings, concentration and drawdowns and use eToro’s virtual portfolio to see what actually opens. A popular investor is not necessarily a careful investor, and an impressive historical return can conceal considerable risk.

Shares, ETFs, CFDs And Crypto: Check What You’re Buying
One of eToro’s conveniences is also a potential source of confusion: the same market can appear as an underlying investment or as a CFD. Buying an eligible share without leverage can give the investor an economic interest in the actual security, while a leveraged or short share CFD only tracks its price and can incur overnight financing. eToro warns that some non-leveraged purchases are CFDs too, depending on the asset and local restrictions.
For a long-term investor, that distinction matters. A share or ETF CFD can be more expensive to hold than a suitable underlying investment. Fractional shares may also have transfer restrictions, and holding crypto in an eToro account doesn’t necessarily mean that position can be moved to a wallet—particularly when the crypto forms part of a copied portfolio.
Practical example: a British customer looking at a US-listed ETF should be aware that eToro’s UK offering provides those ETFs as CFDs. Someone wanting to own a fund for years may prefer an eligible UK- or EU-listed ETF available as an underlying holding. Compare the actual order ticket, not simply the name of the fund. UK product details.
UK Investors: eToro’s Separate Moneyfarm ISA
For British customers, eToro has added a useful investing option through Moneyfarm-powered ISAs. The DIY Stocks and Shares ISA lets eligible investors select investments; the managed ISA is for those who want Moneyfarm to run the portfolio. There is also a Cash ISA using a qualifying money-market fund. These accounts have their own fees, funding arrangements and eligibility rules. They are not the main eToro CopyTrader, CFD or crypto account with an ISA tax wrapper placed around it.
Two practical catches are worth knowing. You fund the ISA through its own Moneyfarm process, not by depositing cash into the normal eToro account. And a transfer from another Stocks and Shares ISA is handled in cash rather than by transferring existing securities intact. That can mean selling and repurchasing investments, potentially leaving money out of the market during the transfer. Funding instructions · ISA transfer details.
The ISA gives UK readers another reason to consider eToro, but it should be compared with other ISA providers on investment choice, total cost and transfer terms, not on the strength of eToro’s social-trading reputation.
eToro Fees: Where The Cost Actually Appears
eToro’s charges are quite different for investing, copying and leveraged trading. There is no general account-opening or inactivity fee under its current schedule, and eligible ETF orders do not carry an eToro dealing commission. That does not make every transaction free: stock commissions, CFD costs, FX conversion and withdrawals still need checking. Current official fee schedule.
| Example | What the published fees imply | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Buying ten shares in separate orders | Where the stock commission is $1 per order, ten opening trades cost $10; one trade costs $1. Rates can instead be $2, or different, depending on country and exchange. | Small, frequent orders can accumulate dealing costs. |
| CopyTrader or ETF investing | No additional CopyTrader management fee; eligible ETF transactions have no eToro dealing commission. Ordinary stock commission exemptions can apply to positions within a copy. | Market spread, fund charges, FX and costs on copied CFDs may remain. |
| $5,000 stock CFD | At eToro’s listed 0.15% per side for most stock/ETF CFDs, an unchanged $5,000 position implies $15 across opening and closing before other costs. | Funding on an overnight CFD position can be more important than the initial dealing cost. Certain low-priced US shares have different pricing. |
| Withdrawing $100 | A $5 fee on an eligible external withdrawal from the USD investment account is 5% of $100. Eligible local-currency account withdrawals are listed as free. | The account currency changes the withdrawal decision; conversion charges may apply elsewhere. |
These are illustrations based on published terms, not live execution tests. For someone buying shares regularly, I would also compare XTB and Interactive Brokers. For leveraged forex and index trading, the appropriate comparison is with active-trader brokers and their full spread, commission and financing costs—not with an ETF commission headline.
Demo Account, Funding And Support
eToro gives new users a $100,000 virtual portfolio. I see that as especially valuable for testing CopyTrader: you can see which holdings are copied, how cash is allocated and what happens when an investor changes positions, without putting real money at risk. A simulated result is not proof of how live trades will fill.
The ordinary investment account, eligible local-currency payment account and Moneyfarm ISA have different funding and withdrawal procedures. Before depositing, check which account receives the money and whether converting it into the investment currency incurs a charge. eToro offers online support and account-dependent service tiers, but this is a research-led review: GradTraders has not personally tested eToro’s live dealing, withdrawals or support response times.

eToro Pros And Cons
What Works Well
- CopyTrader and Smart Portfolios offer two distinct ways to follow investment ideas.
- Shares, ETFs and social research are accessible through one web/mobile platform.
- More substantial local propositions than its social-trading reputation suggests, including US, Australian and Singapore routes.
- Demo investing makes it possible to examine copying mechanics before funding.
- UK customers have separate GBP payment and ISA options.
What To Consider
- CopyTrader’s small-position threshold can change the resulting portfolio.
- Markets and investment ownership differ significantly by country.
- Stock, CFD, crypto, FX and withdrawal costs need examining separately.
- No native MT4, MT5 or cTrader offering for established trading automation.
- Some investment holdings cannot be transferred to another broker intact.
Final Verdict: eToro Earns 8.2/10
eToro earns 8.2/10 because it offers something different from the brokers built primarily for active trading. CopyTrader, Smart Portfolios and accessible share and ETF investing make it a credible choice for people who want to manage investments and follow other investors in the same place. Its international growth is also worth recognising: the US, Australian, Singaporean and UK offerings are materially different businesses, rather than identical versions of the same app.
That breadth comes with some complexity. A copied portfolio can leave out smaller positions. A share purchase may be structured differently depending on the country. A low dealing commission does not eliminate FX or CFD financing costs. And in the UK, the ISA belongs to the separately provided Moneyfarm route. These are the details I would want clear before opening an account.
For self-directed investing, I’d compare eToro with XTB (8.5/10) and Interactive Brokers (8.9/10). For MetaTrader automation, frequent forex or index trading, Pepperstone (9.1/10) is a more appropriate comparison. If I were choosing an account specifically to research other investors and use CopyTrader, eToro would deserve a serious look. If I had no intention of using those features, I would look much harder at the alternatives.
