Why Do Traders Leave IG Or CMC For Lower Spread Brokers?

Lower spread brokers often enter the conversation when IG or CMC Markets traders become more sensitive to cost, platform choice, execution or account structure. IG and CMC Markets are established international brokers with different entities and product sets across regions, so switching only makes sense when another broker genuinely improves the setup available to you.

Core Decision Compare Before Switching

Compare the same markets, position sizes and trading conditions before moving. A lower advertised minimum spread on its own proves very little.

Products, platforms, account types and protections can vary by country and legal entity.

Quick Verdict: Lower Spread Does Not Automatically Mean Better Broker

Some traders compare lower spread brokers with IG or CMC Markets because their trading has become more frequent, more specialised or more sensitive to all-in costs. Raw-style pricing, cTrader, a particular TradingView connection, automation or a cheaper core market can make another broker worth testing.

Both brokers also offer more active-trader flexibility than the old proprietary-platform stereotype suggests. The detailed platform and pricing differences are compared below.

Before switching, compare the exact market, account, platform and legal entity available in your country. Then test the alternative on a controlled scale and see whether the improvement is real.

The Six Main Reasons Traders Compare Alternatives

1

Trade Frequency Makes Small Costs Visible

A small spread difference may barely matter on an occasional swing trade but become meaningful when the same market is entered and exited repeatedly.

Frequent TradingCost Sensitive
2

Raw Pricing Can Fit Some Strategies Better

Some traders prefer a narrower underlying spread plus a separate commission because the all-in transaction cost can be easier to measure across repeated forex or metals trades.

Raw SpreadCommission Model
3

The Platform Becomes Part Of The Strategy

A move can make sense when cTrader, TradingView, MetaTrader automation or another workflow materially improves order entry, charting or position management.

4

Execution And Slippage Matter More

As trading frequency rises, fill quality, rejected orders, slippage and platform stability can matter as much as the displayed spread.

5

One Core Market May Be Better Elsewhere

A broker can be competitive overall while being less attractive on the exact index, currency pair, metal or share CFD that dominates one trader’s activity.

6

The Trader Wants A Different Account Route

Spread betting, CFDs, Standard pricing, Raw pricing and regional legal entities are not interchangeable settings. They can change tax treatment, cost structure, product access and client protection.

Entity CheckProtection Trade-Off

IG And CMC Are Stronger Active-Trader Options Than The Old Stereotype Suggests

IG

Broad Markets And A Much Wider Platform Stack

IG operates internationally through multiple regional entities, and its product and platform mix changes by market. Its UK platform range includes TradingView, MT4, MT5, ProRealTime and L2 Dealer alongside IG’s own software, while other regions use different combinations.

That means traders wanting advanced charts, MetaTrader automation, specialist execution tools or a broad market list may have more options inside IG than the older proprietary-platform stereotype suggests.

Another broker should therefore earn the switch by improving the setup you need, not by benefiting from an outdated view of what IG offers.

CMC Markets

Proprietary Strength Plus Active-FX Routes

CMC Markets also operates internationally, with regional entities and product sets across multiple markets. Its established proprietary platform remains central, while MetaTrader and TradingView are available on supported accounts and in supported regions.

CMC’s current FX Active pages advertise spreads from 0.0 pips on six major currency pairs with fixed commission pricing and a discount across hundreds of additional FX pairs, although eligibility and product access vary by region.

CMC therefore gives active forex traders more to compare than the old “spread-only proprietary broker” label suggests.

TradingView detail: CMC currently supports direct TradingView execution for eligible CFD and FX Active accounts. Its official information says some spread-betting accounts, including those offered in the UK, Ireland and Australia, are currently excluded from that connection.

IG, CMC And Lower Spread Brokers Compared

The Real Cost Of Trading Is More Than The Headline Spread

Compare the full cost of opening, holding and closing the position you actually trade, not just the number shown in a spread advert.

Opening And Closing Cost

Spread

The difference between the buy and sell prices.

Commission

A separate charge on Raw, FX Active, share CFD or specialist routes.

Slippage

The difference between the requested price and actual fill, particularly during faster markets.

Holding And Account Cost

Overnight Funding

Financing can materially change the cost of positions held beyond the broker’s daily cut-off.

FX Conversion

Conversion may apply when the account currency and settlement currency differ.

Data / Platform

Market data, professional platforms or specialist services can add cost on some routes.

GradTraders test: calculate the complete round-trip cost at your normal position size. A minimum spread of 0.0 pips does not mean the trade is free, and a spread-only account is not automatically expensive.

When Raw Pricing Can Be Better — And When It May Not Matter

More Relevant

Frequent Forex Or Metals Trading

A raw-plus-commission structure can be easier to evaluate when a trader repeatedly enters and exits liquid currency pairs or metals.

Less Important

Infrequent Swing Trading

If positions are held for days or weeks, overnight funding, market choice and risk management can outweigh a small difference in the opening spread.

Market Specific

Raw Does Not Apply Everywhere

A Raw account may use commission on forex or metals while indices, commodities or other products remain spread-priced.

Platform Choice Can Be A Valid Reason To Move

Trading software affects charting, automation, order entry, alerts and position management. Changing broker for a platform can make sense when that platform clearly improves a process you already use.

TradingView

Useful for chart-led workflows, alerts, Pine Script analysis and supported broker execution.

cTrader

Relevant for traders who prefer cTrader’s interface, order tools and automation environment.

MetaTrader

Important for established Expert Advisors, indicators, VPS workflows and existing MT4/MT5 automation.

Proprietary Platforms

IG and CMC can still be stronger when integrated research, market breadth and one-account convenience matter most.

Do Not Trade Away Regulatory Protection Just To Obtain More Leverage

Moving from a locally regulated retail account to an overseas or differently regulated entity can change leverage limits, negative balance protection, client-money treatment, complaint routes and compensation arrangements. The exact differences depend on the jurisdiction and legal entity.

For UK readers specifically, the FCA warned in October 2025 about firms encouraging retail CFD clients to opt into professional status or move to overseas entities without equivalent protections. Other countries use different regulatory frameworks, so the same principle applies: compare the protection attached to the actual account, not just the broker brand.

Changing legal entity is a regulatory decision before it is a pricing decision.

When Switching May Be Rational

Evidence Based

A Measured Improvement Exists

  • Your own sample shows a lower all-in round-trip cost on the markets you trade most.
  • The replacement platform improves a tested workflow.
  • Live fills and slippage are at least as reliable at your normal size.
  • The legal entity and client-protection framework are acceptable for your jurisdiction.
  • Funding and a small withdrawal test work cleanly.
Strategy Fit

The Existing Route Does Not Fit The Strategy

  • You specifically need cTrader or another unavailable platform.
  • Your strategy is unusually sensitive to the current broker’s cost on one core market.
  • The existing product list does not provide the instrument or contract structure required.
  • You have verified the commission-adjusted cost of a Raw-style account.
  • You understand the regulation, tax and product consequences of changing route.

When You Probably Should Not Switch

You Have Not Calculated The Full Cost

A minimum-spread advert is not a complete broker comparison. Commission, funding and slippage can erase an apparent saving.

You Are Still Learning Basic Risk Control

A different broker will not fix oversized positions, revenge trading, poor stops or inconsistent strategy rules.

The Alternative Reduces Protection

More leverage or cheaper-looking conditions may not compensate for weaker client-money, negative-balance, complaint or compensation protections.

How To Test A Replacement Broker Before Moving

1

Confirm The Legal Entity

Read the application and client agreement. The global brand name is not enough to identify the company holding the account or the regulator that applies.

2

Open The Correct Demo Route

Test the platform and account type you expect to use live. A generic demo may not reproduce every live condition.

3

Record Comparable Spread Samples

Observe the same market at the same trading times instead of comparing unrelated minimum figures.

4

Add Commission And Funding

Convert separate charges into the account currency and calculate the total cost at your normal position size.

5

Fund Small And Test Execution

Use a controlled amount and compare fill quality, order behaviour, stops and platform stability.

6

Complete A Small Withdrawal

Verify the withdrawal route before committing meaningful capital and note any documentation or processing friction.

Do not close a reliable account prematurely. A limited parallel test can show whether the alternative genuinely improves the setup without forcing an all-or-nothing decision.

Regulators Also Look Beyond The Headline Spread

The UK FCA’s November 2025 review of CFD providers looked at bid/offer spreads, commissions and overnight funding rather than treating one advertised spread as the complete price. It also highlighted wide variation in overnight funding charges and cases where the justification or disclosure was not good enough.

The broader lesson applies well beyond the UK: overnight funding can matter as much as the opening spread when positions are held beyond the trading day. A cheaper entry price may be irrelevant if the holding costs are worse for the way you trade.

Final Verdict

Lower spread brokers can be worth testing, but a reliable existing account does not need replacing simply because another firm advertises a tighter minimum spread or a newer platform.

A new broker earns the move only if it is measurably better where your strategy actually needs it to be better. That could mean total cost, execution, software, product access or account structure.

Wherever you trade, the legal entity, product availability and client protections still belong in that decision. If the alternative looks cheaper but leaves you with a weaker overall account, the saving is not much of a victory.

Why Traders Leave IG Or CMC: Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some traders leave IG or CMC Markets?

Some traders become more sensitive to all-in trading costs, want a different platform such as cTrader, prefer a Raw-style account or find another broker more competitive on the specific markets they trade most often.

Are IG and CMC Markets expensive brokers?

That cannot be answered from one headline spread. Both use market- and account-specific pricing, and both have routes relevant to active traders. A useful comparison includes spread, commission, overnight funding, slippage, currency conversion, platform value and client protection.

Does IG offer TradingView, MT4 and MT5?

IG offers a broad platform range, but availability varies by region and account. Its current UK platform range includes its own web and mobile platforms, TradingView, MT4, MT5, ProRealTime and L2 Dealer, so traders elsewhere should check the exact regional platform list.

Does CMC Markets offer TradingView?

Yes, on eligible accounts and in supported regions. CMC currently supports direct TradingView execution for certain CFD and FX Active accounts, while some spread-betting accounts are excluded.

What is CMC Markets FX Active?

FX Active is a commission-based CFD account route for forex trading. CMC currently advertises spreads from 0.0 pips on six major pairs, fixed commission and a spread discount across hundreds of additional FX pairs, with availability varying by region.

Are lower spread brokers always cheaper?

No. A lower headline spread can be offset by commission, overnight funding, slippage, currency conversion or a different account structure. Compare the complete cost on the markets and position sizes you actually trade.

Is Pepperstone a direct replacement for IG or CMC?

Pepperstone is a strong active-trader comparison because it combines Razor-style pricing with multiple platforms including cTrader, TradingView and MetaTrader. It is still not identical to IG or CMC in market breadth, proprietary tools, product coverage or regional account structure.

Should a trader move to an overseas broker for higher leverage?

Not without understanding the exact legal entity and protection trade-off. An overseas account can have different leverage and conditions, but it may also change client-money treatment, negative-balance protection, complaint routes or compensation arrangements. The relevant comparison depends on the trader’s jurisdiction.

How should I compare broker execution quality?

Use the same market, order size and trading time across a controlled sample. Record quoted spread, fill price, slippage, rejected orders, platform stability and behaviour around volatile periods. Demo results are useful but do not guarantee live execution.

Should I close my current broker account before testing another?

Usually there is no need to make the decision all at once. A small parallel test can compare funding, live execution and withdrawals while preserving access to the existing account, subject to each broker’s terms and availability in your jurisdiction.
